Cycling through the beautiful countryside of Belgium, the spiritual home of cycling.
Please join us on this fantastic, fun adventure, cycling approximately 250 miles in 3 days from Bruges, one of the most beautiful and historic cities in Europe known as the Venice of the North, to the amazing city of Spa referred to as the ‘Pearl of the Ardennes’ and renowned for its health-giving hot water springs.
The ‘ Flandennes’ 3 day classic has been specifically designed for us by our professional rider and team leader; Phil ‘no gears’ Deeker. Those of you who participated on Paris in 2007 or joined us on our trip across Ireland in 2009 will have met Phil and I’m delighted to announce that he has agreed to lead his support team for a third consecutive challenge during our quest in Belgium next year. (You can find out more about Phil if you visit the Riders and Support crew section of this site).
The ride has been designed so that with a small amount of training anyone (over the age of 16) can participate. It will deliver challenges and you will finish after 3 days having achieved real personal goals. This is NOT a race and our main object is to organise a challenging yet fun event that will raise a great deal of money for Sarah’s Fund.
During the ride you will discover the real Belgium via canal paths, cobbled climbs, old converted railway tracks , the beautiful Modave Chateau (where we will be staying for one evening), the Mur which is a famous feature of the town of Huy (and is internationally renowned by cyclists worldwide) along with the wild beauty of the Ardennes. From the charming, historic town of Bruges to the thermal haven of Spa, you will cycle along quiet roads through varied countryside.
Belgium is recognised as one of the most cycle friendly nations in the world and the route has been designed to make this trip a fun yet challenging 3-day adventure. It remains accessible to riders of all abilities as long as there is a basic level of fitness.
Phil and I have recently travelled and planned the route between Bruges and Spa and it will be an extraordinary ride across some of the most beautiful countryside in the world with spectacular views throughout. The ride will be very similar in distance and can be compared to Paris 2008 and Ireland in 2010 where we will be cycling approximately 70 to 80 miles each day and enjoy comfortable accommodation and catering throughout. There will be regular stops and the support vehicles will also be on hand.
